The plants growing on the Illinois prairies
and in the Illinois woods are beautiful because
they’re hardy. Their roots reach down deeper
than the cold wind and weather can touch.
It’s hard to find an arrogant prairie plant.
Out here, our natives grow and grow
and don’t post much on social media;
hidden in their work until—mixed with
their friends as strange as them—they shine
bright with the fullness of useful community.
If you drive too fast down Route 66, you’ll miss
the ditches, fields, & towns of companionship.
Drive slow. Avoid the rows of fields and
houses That are all the same. They can
cool your spirit with their shades of beige
and white. They are failing, but you are hardy.
